A smooth heavy equipment haul starts before the truck leaves the yard. Most delays we see come from missing numbers, a surprise attachment, or a gate nobody can open. This checklist covers what dispatch asks for on the first call.
Get the width, height, and weight
Measure the machine the way it will travel, with the bucket, blade, or thumb mounted. Attachments change the width and the height.
Florida needs a permit over 8 feet 6 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, or 80,000 pounds. We haul up to 82,000 pounds. If the piece is heavier, we say so on the call.
If you only have the make and model, send it. A photo of the machine as it will travel helps more than a spec sheet.
Fold, pin, or remove what you can
Fold or pin the boom at the yard before we bid the date. Take off loose parts that can shift on the deck. Lower the blade or bucket and lock it.
Tell us what stays on. A machine with a thumb on is a different load from the same machine with the thumb off.
Check both ends of the haul
Soft ground, tight gates, and low branches belong on the first call. Sand and grove dirt can hold a trailer back. A locked lot needs a gate code and a named spotter.
Give dispatch both addresses. We plan the route from them, including the road for the day and any night window the city allows.
Know when the load needs a permit or an escort
A load over the Florida limits needs a permit. Width over 12 feet is the usual point where Florida adds a civilian escort. Pilot cars, flags, and lights go on when the load or the route needs them.
Our oversized load transport page covers how we handle wide loads.
Pick the right trailer
Tall machines ride a drop-deck. We run an RGN or a lowboy behind a Kenworth, and we own the trailer.
For machines on a job site, see construction equipment transport. For tractors and harvesters, see farm equipment transport. The general page is heavy equipment transport.
